Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 292
Abstract
The article examines the experience of applying the immersion method when studying the foreign languages in the developed countries and the possibility of its wide use in Ukraine. The contemporary views of Ukrainian and foreign linguists concerning its role in mastering foreign languages and importance in teaching have been analyzed. It has been determined, that the use of the immersion method in studying foreign languages, as experts say, is very sustainable and important. It is considered the shortest and the best way of learning foreign languages. It has been investigated that the method involves not only the use of a foreign language in classes, but also the inclusion of pupils (students) in the culture and traditions of native speakers. There is a natural immersion in the environment of a language studied, because the barriers of uncertainty and pressure of teacher evaluation are removed. The application of the method awakens the interest to the educational material and convinces in its practical value, activates and develops the processes of thinking. For 30 years (1976-2006), the Center for Applied Linguistics has monitored the "Immersion into a Foreign Language" program that has been functioning in the United States. A comparative analysis has demonstrated that there has been a steady increase in immersion study in the country. It was gifted with considerable attention both from the state and the public. This is evidenced by the large number of publications, decrees and an increase in the number of immersion schools. It is suggested to monitor better the connection between the method and the individual capabilities of students, depending on their temperament and the impact on the effectiveness of learning. We would consider it expedient to study the possibility of applying immersion education at the place of compact residence of national minorities in Ukraine, where the language issue is acute (Hungarians, Romanians).
