In vitro evaluation of free radical scavenging activity of medicinal plant Polyalthia longifolia (Sonner.) Thw. leaf extract

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 10

Abstract

The present study was aimed at investigating the antioxidant activities of the ethanol and chloroform extracts of the leaves of Polyalthia longifolia (Sonner.) Thw. (Annonaceae). The antioxidant activities of the extracts have been evaluated by using ten in vitro assays and were compared to standard antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, a-tocopherol, curcumin, butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) and Trolox. Both the extracts showed effective H + donor activity, reducing power, free radical scavenging activity, metal chelating ability, etc. The generation of free radicals, viz., O 2 · - , OH · , H 2 O 2 , NO · and peroxyl radicals, were effectively scavenged by the extracts. The antioxidant property was concentration dependent and increased with increasing amount of the extracts. The total phenolic content, flavonoid content and total antioxidant activity in plant were determined as microgram (µg) pyrocatechol, quercetin and a-tocopherol equivalent/mg, respectively. The free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the plant. The results obtained in the present study indicate that the leaves of P. longifolia scavenge free radicals and could serve as a potential source of natural antioxidant.
