Abstract
The paper demonstrates the interaction of language and speech on the example of Modal Verbs. Any theoretical English Grammar contains the paragraph concerning Modal Verbs of the English language. It (paragraph) reflects the author(s)’ certain opinion as to the number of Modal Verbs, their grammatical forms and their possibility to join Modal Verbs group and another language-as-a-system information. But an English learner usually needs some specific knowledge of the language instead of the language system in general, which does not take into account lexical and grammatical features of a definite area (sublanguage) of its functioning. That is why the researchers’ main attention to different speech units including Modal Verbs is concentrated on the functional side of these units, i.e. on the implementation of their grammatical categories in the text corpora. The authors of the paper equally take into account the viewpoints of the famous theoretical linguists and the peculiarities of the scientific texts as the main principles of Modal Verbs selection for their being the future object of investigation in the research on the functioning of Modal Verbs in the texts of scientific style. So some of Modal Verbs, which are supposed to be the units of this group, were excluded from the list of verbs intended for our analysis. Since the authors first of all are oriented at the semantic characteristics of the verbs and at the consultations with the specialists in the scientific and technical areas of the knowledge chosen. Given principles of forming the object of the future research helped avoid the unproductive waste of time and obtain the reliable practical results
