Intellectuals: letters, networks and institutions. The epistolary archive of the Bahía Blanca Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores in between History and Anthropology (1941-1952)

Abstract
In 1931, the concerns of a group of liberal intellectuals led to the formation of the Colegio Libre de Estudios Superiores (CLES) in Buenos Aires, who expressed interest in developing what they called “higher culture”. Among its more established practices were delivering courses in “free lectures” and editing the journal Cursos y conferencias. Since 1940, the CLES´s leaders tried to decentralize its activities, by forming affliated institutions in other argentinian cities. Thus in 1941, a subsidiary in Bahía Blanca was opened under the leadership of a socialist lawyer, Pablo Lejarraga. Since its creation, the organization established the dissemination of their activities in the city´s area of influence as a work pattern, holding the generalized representation of the town as a mobilizing center for the country´s southern territories. This geopolitical intention intertwined with the encouragement given to member’s pre-existing personal links, resulting from their previous participation in areas of political sociability, along with their social and generational bonds and their institutional affliations. The life trajectories of subjects like Lejarraga, accessible through their epistolary archives, appear favorable for an analysis that seeks to explain the connections and dynamics that gave substance to the different entities and, simultaneously, allow us to understand the diverse interests that traversed them.
