INVESTIGATIONS OF THE STATIC FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF PE-UHMW POLYETHYLENE SUBJECTED TO THE IONIZING RADIATIONS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 263, Issue 5

Abstract

The paper describes an investigation of a static friction coefficient of PE-UHMW polyethylene subjected to ionizing radiations and aging, which imitated a biological influence of the human body on the tested material. Tribological tests were conducted in a reciprocating motion at the beginning of movement against ANSI 316L austenitic stainless steel and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, both common materials applied in implantation surgery. Changes in the static friction coefficient were analysed in association with a contact pressure (in the range 0.5–2.5 MPa) depending on the ionizing radiation dose of PE-UHMW (in the range 25–250 kGy), for both kinds of metal counter samples. The studies confirmed that the static friction coefficient decreases with an increase in contact pressure (in the tested range). It has been found that the optimal ionizing radiation dose, due to the friction value, falls between 100 and 250 kGy, for all tested contact pressures and material couples. The mechanism of the reduction in frictional resistance values has not been identified in this case and requires further research, and the kinetic friction resistance needs to be determined.
