Is the music of Maurice Ravel the symptom of his neurological disease?
Journal Title: Український неврологічний журнал - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
The present article is devoted to the investigation of the possible influence of the famous French composer Maurice Ravel’s degenerative brain damage on his musical works. A pathographic analysis of publications containing information on the state of health and creativity of the composer was carried out. The study of medical and musical biographers of the composer allowed to establish that all unusual musical works of Maurice Ravel (Bolero and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major) are the result of using specific means of musical expression necessary for creating a unique musical image and characteristic of the individual musical style of the composer. The presence of these «techniques» (multiple repetitions of the melody and extraordinary timbre variety) in the earlier works of Maurice Ravel and their absence in his last compositions makes it possible to exclude the impact of the disease on his musical style.
