ISLAND AS A DYING BODY IN METAPHORICAL SYSTEM OF “FAREWELL TO MATYORA” BY V.G. RASPUTIN

Abstract

This study analyses image of the island in the artistic work by V. Rasputin «Farewell to Matyora”. An island is considered as living organism. Author of the paper finds out the similarity between the island and human creativity on several levels. On corporal (physical) level this similarity consists in that as well as any person, an island has it’s birth (it’s mother is Angara), experiences the chain of events, gets older, dies. In the center of narration in work is a pore of aging of island. So the old personages are central in “Farewell to Matyora”, too. From here is a symbolics of light in work by V. Rasputin. Mostly a writer describes light, which grows dim, goes out. Second level of similarity between the island and human creativity, which was studied in the article also, - morally-spiritual. The island, as any living organism, has a soul and conscience. The keepers of the soul and consciousness of island are his habitants. So their oblivion is connected with the loss of values and death. But the soul of island lives only in the oldest it’s habitants (in mothers). Young people give up at home, mothers and depart to a city. So they betray the island and kill it’s soul. The main strategy of research in the paper is mythopoetic. The author finds roots of images in “Farewell to Matyoa” in eschatology phenomenon (dying of the island and it’s keepers begins the destroying of Cosmos). But an island and people are rescued at the same time. They disappear, but does not die, as ibn the legend about Kitezh.
