JULIAN ROMANCHUK – PUBLISHER AND THE RESEARCHER OF T. SHEVCHENKO’S CREATIVES

Abstract
The article determines the role and significance of Y. Romanchuk's activity in the field of Ukrainian Shevchenko Stud- ies at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. The main attention is paid on the editor-publishing activity of Y. Romanchuk. In particular, his participation in the preparations, scientific commentary and publication of T. Shevchenko’s legacy was considered. Emphasis is placed on problematic issues of chronology, authenticity of T. Shevchenko’s texts and also on the language-stylistic features of works. There are also emphasized advantages and disadvantages of T. Shevchen- ko’s works edited by Y. Romanchuk in comparison with other editions of “Kobzar”. Y. Romanchuk’s comments about T. Shevchenko’s texts are valuable from the point of view of modern literary criticism. In his comments, Y. Romanchuk focuses on the previous editions of T. Shevchenko’s works, in particular, in Prague (1876), St. Petersburg (1860), Lviv (1867–1869), the Geneva (1890) edition of Kobzar, the magazine “Vechornitsi”, where Kob- zar’s poems were published, compares with his own handwritten version of the texts of the poet's works and, in view of this, suggests to take into account the numerous amendments proposed by him. As a publisher and editor of T. Shevchenko’s works Y. Romanchuk subsequently became criticized. In addition to the many textual mistakes, for example, in the publication of T. Shevchenko's works in 1902, Y. Romanchuk was criticized for contained works that did not belong to T. Shevchenko, for interference with the language of the poet and its approach to the Galician dialect, not perfect composition structure, etc. He did not deny that his work wasn’t perfect. The most publications of Y. Romanchuk had popular character, therefore, the compiler placed the main emphasis on the tex- tual processing of materials. It was sometimes related to many arbitrary interventions in Shevchenko’s works by editor-publisher, he even confessed in that fact. Y. Romanchuk, as a textologist, believed that due to the thorough work about the preparation of Shevchenko's texts for printing, in the near future, the whole critically-verified edition of authentic texts of Kobzar will be revealed.
