THE PHENOMENON OF THE SIXTIES: RECEPTION AND ASSESSMENT IN SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATION TRADITION
Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 20, Issue 2
Abstract
The article highlights the philosophical and aesthetic preconditions for the functioning of the phenomenon of the sixties in the Ukrainian literary process in the late 20th century as well as defines the role of literary translation in the literary-critical discourse of the above mentioned period, and a new level of its interpretation as a creative impulse in national literature. The 1960s remain the defining decade for political, social and cultural life of Ukraine marked by a rapid increase both in hidden and unmasked opposition to the Soviet regime. The prognosis for liberty and social free- doms came to be broader, thus covering the scope of reorganization to all forms of social life as well as demanded a high degree of social equality. Seen in this light, the frame of reference has to be attributed to the literary generation of the 1960s, commonly recognized as“shistdesyatnyky”, a group of educated people (writers, poets, translators and filmmak- ers) who intended to renovate the traditions of classic pre-revolution intelligentsia focusing on the concepts of spiritual independence, social and political disaffection, moral and aesthetic norms and ideals. As the crucial point in political and cultural life of Ukraine, the period in question came to be the platform for global explosion in Ukrainian translations. Among the ones who announced radically new visions and approaches to the art of translation and interpretation, in particular, demonstrating the ability to adapt to different styles and cultures, and thus placing the Ukrainian translation on a new stage of its development, were Mykola Lukash, Hrigory Kochur, Anatol Perapadya, Rostislav Dotsenko, Yury Lisnyak, Dmytro Palamarchuk, Mykola Dmytrenko, Volodymir Mytrophanov and others. Their key assumption was to prove that their mission in the Ukrainian cultural process came to provide a common base of values for the target reader to share and respect. Their philosophical considerations and literary argumentations contributed greatly not only to the reinforcement of Ukrainian translation tradition but also proved to be a certain breakthrough that manifested a revival of Ukrainian translations as well as opened the prospects for their worldwide recognition.
