Journal Title: The journal of international civilization studies - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

This research was made to analyze the role of emotions in Kieslowski's Cinema, based on the Three Colors Trilogy. Kieslowski said that “the common values of humanity are not religion, language, race or flag; the common values are pain, sorrow, joy, love," and he shapes his cinema on this philosophy. He doesn’t focus on grand narratives, politics, and social structures in his films; he is a name that gives place to small and subjective worlds of the individuals. He is interested in the efforts of individuals to exist. “What I really care about is the individual existence of human,” says Kieslowski. Sociology of emotions is also important in understanding the dynamics of human behavior and interaction processes in social organization. Emotions are not internal and subjective reactions free from social structure. Affective forms are learned in the process of socialization, and they function to carry cultural patterns to the future. Therefore, emotions cannot be handled independently of social values, morality and the ways of thinking. However, this finding does not mean that the social effects on emotions operate in a deterministic manner, ignoring the subjective will. Emotions are important on the way from the individual to the social and life is built on emotions. Kieslowski is a director who impressively reflected this awareness to his cinema. Within the scope of this study, which was designed with descriptive research method; the relationship between the search for meaning and the sociology of emotions in Kieslowski's cinema has been revealed and Three Color Trilogy, was analyzed with the Auteur Criticism Technique. As the result of the research, it has been seen that the cinema’s of Kieslowski carries all the elements about emotions, cinematographic style and narrative structure, which enables the director to be defined as an auteur.
