Abstract

Introduction and objective of the study: During the period of adolescence many young people begin their sex life, often not having any knowledge about contraception. The objective of the study was assessment of the level of knowledge concerning hormonal contraception methods among secondary-school adolescents.Materials and the methods: The study was conducted in the Centre for Lifelong Education in Kijany in the Lublin Region, with the use of a self designed questionnaire. A total of 160 questionnaire forms were addressed to randomly selected secondary-school adolescents. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The secondary school adolescents examined most frequently indicated cervical cancer, depression, mental disorders and endometrial cancer as the risk factors of using hormonal contraception; however, only few respondents mentioned thrombotic and embolic complications as a risk factor of using hormonal contraception. As the major advantage of applying hormonal contraception the adolescents considered the regulation of menstrual cycles.Conclusions. According to the respondents, the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives depends on compliance with the procedures for their application. There is a need to educate secondary school adolescents concerning the risk factors of hormonal contraception, extra-contraceptive benefits of this method of birth control, and the possibility of using oral contraceptives for more than 21 days.Key words: hormonal contraception methods, knowledge, adolescents
