Knowledge Transfer of Experienced Exploratory Testers in Real Operational Setting
Journal Title: International Journal of Electronics Communication and Computer Technology - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Test combinations executed by exploratory testers are of utmost importance towards error detection and cannot be designed by test case based or scripted techniques. Tests are designed and executed at the same time, and they are often not recorded. This paper presents a practical experiment that compares experienced exploratory tests and junior exploratory tests allowing the junior exploratory testers (JETs) to analyze and learn the experienced exploratory tester’s tests they failed to design. In the experiment, one experienced exploratory tester (EET) manually executed tests on a sample software application with only four graphical user interfaces. The EET tests were saved in an EET test case table. Five software engineering students who were selected as JETs also executed their tests on the same sample application and their tests were saved in JET test case table. Upon test completion, EET and JET test case tables were compared and output the difference (missed tests). Each student participated in four sessions, after each session analysis of missed tests was performed and gained knowledge of the tricks used to unearth errors. We found that JETs can become more creative and gain practical knowledge through participation in activities and analysis of missed EET tests. This approach can be adopted as a means of training naïve testers to become proficient exploratory testers. Focus has been given on knowledge transfer of experienced exploratory testers to increase understanding of high-risk exploratory test scenarios that can fast track naïve or junior testers to become proficient exploratory testers
