Kościół, jako narzędzie legitymizacji władzy w Królestwie Polskim
Journal Title: Dzieje Biurokracji - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
Freedom of conscience and religion in the individual and collective (institutional) dimension, constituting a basic human right derived from human dignity, rightly demands special legal protection in contemporary society. Like the systemic principle of the separation of state and church. The history of the Polish nation confirms the use of the Catholic Church for the legitimization of political power – a goal quite different from those for which believers used their right to self-determination, and which the Catholic Church helped to meet religious needs and shape their own morality based on the Christian authority. Faithfulness to one’s own identity and its principles in case of the Catholic Church was subjected to a special test during the period of national captivity, among others in the area of the Kingdom of Poland. The Catholic Church was used as a tool to legitimize the power of the invader and was subjected to attempts to promote the Russification among Polish society by: teaching priests and using the pulpit to making civil announcements public and using Russian in official correspondence; public prayers for the mansion and Russian officers; receiving an oath to loyalty to the emperor from clerks of public administration; participation in preparation of the list of recruits and supervision over granting marriages to the militaries. However these experiences did not weaken the role of the Church in the Polish nation, which became, at most, a passive performer of these orders, trying to not implement their even to extent that the invaders expected from him. The price for this was limiting his right and activities decisive for the dynamism of the confession group and the active religious life of his followers.
