Abstract

The book theft was one of the biggest problems both in private and institutional libraries. In this paper, the author will examine some ways of protection of early books in a historical perspective. For centuries, the most effective method of discouraging anyone from stealing a book from its proper owner was a curse against thieves. The punishment usually comprised excommunication and damnation. Another way was marking books with signs and ownership records. This includes supralibros, exlibris, stamp, binding, shelfmarks, library label (manuscript, printed or tooled), handwritten notes and other physical features which indicates a possessor. They were frequently removed or blotted out by the next one, a fact that may alert us about former provenance, even when it is no longer identifi able.
