LA CATEGORÍA DE INCOMPLETIVO EN LAS LENGUAS MAYAS: UN ESTUDIO COMPARATIVO DE VARIACIÓN SEMÁNTICA

Journal Title: Studii de Gramatica Contrastiva - Year 2014, Vol 21, Issue 21

Abstract

In the languages of the Mayan family the incompletive belongs to the paradigm of tense/aspect markers. The semantics of this category vary significantly depending on a particular language, although the same term “incompletive” is usually used to identify it. The general meaning of the incompletive may be analyzed as a combination of three elementary meanings: progressive, habitual, and future. There are languages within the Mayan family, where the incompletive embraces all these three meanings, but also there are languages, where the realm of usage of the incompletive is limited to one or two meanings from that list. The semantically reduced incompletive occurs in the languages with extended tense/aspect paradigms, which include other categories that assume some of the three meanings mentioned above. The habitual is present in all languages under consideration, so it seems to be the basic meaning of the Mayan incompletive.
