LES CONTRIBUTIONS ASPECTUELLES DES TIROIRS VERBAUX EN FRANÇAIS, ITALIEN ET EN ANGLAIS
Journal Title: Studii de Gramatica Contrastiva - Year 2012, Vol 17, Issue 17
Abstract
The purpose of this work is to present a comparative description of the relation temporality-aspectuality in two Romance languages – French and Italian – and in English. More specifically, this paper pursues the role played by temporal morphemes to the expression of the aspectual information. In fact, we start from the premise that tense and aspect cannot be treated separately because they both deal with he temporal structure of situations and their functions are complementary: tense places the event in time, taking an external viewpoint, while aspect presents the internal structure of the event, taking an internal viewpoint. If in Romance languages, the markers of aspect have fused with those of tense, in English aspectual oppositions are expressed by syntactic means. In fact, in English the opposition perfective / imperfective has not been grammaticalized its equivalent being the dichotomy perfective / progressive (or non-progressive / progressive). Our analysis will be based on a French corpus and on its translations in English and Italian. Taking into account the contribution of tense and aspect to our understanding and interpretation of texts, we find the study of this subject very important not only for the acquisition of a foreign language but also for the acquisition and the comprehension of our own language. The study of this topic is necessary in order to minimize the large number of grammatical, semantic and pragmatic mistakes made by translators who ignore the permanent interference between temporal and aspectual values at the level of past tenses.
