LEXICAL FEATURES OF THE SHIPS' BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE

Abstract

The paper deals with the main characteristics of the ships' business correspondence, its structure and lexical units. The features of business correspondence are considered on examples from maritime letters, telexes and telegrams. Characteristic features of business correspondence are the large number of terms, abbreviations and standard phrases of the maritime industry. The typology and components division of terminology used in shipping correspondence, standard phrases and peculiarities of their use by the place and thematic stratification, abbreviations and their widespread in the ships' business correspondence are considered in this article. The official style is the style, we use every day at work, in the university. Most of the letters are written in this style, and shipping is no exception. Very relevant is the topic of ships' business correspondence, because professional duties of seafarers include the conduct of business correspondence in English. The most significant feature of official-business style is the standardization of the documents' language, which shows typical and frequent situation in business relations. It helps to save space and time during registration, as well as in processing documents and adequate perception and understanding of them, increases the information content of documents. In ships' business correspondence, there are shortcuts appointed for visual perception – graphic, text. These cuts are not words, they are used only in writing, and they can be decoded and read in full version. The ships' correspondence feature is the presence of the maritime narrow specialization terminology and the symbols, that is usually understood only by seafarers, because of their narrow specialization. The significance of terminology and symbols are fixed in special dictionaries and reference books.
