Linguistic and Stylistic Means of the Image Sacralization as an Object of Translation Analysis.

Abstract

The article deals with the notion of the image sacralization as represented in the original and translated versions of three dystopian novels – ''We'' by Eugene Zamiatin, ''Brave New world'' by Aldous Huxley, and ''1984'' by George Orwell. The notion of sacralization comes from philosophy where it is understood as acquiring a sacred religious meaning by objects or people. In philological studies sacralization is rather common as a literary phenomenon while it's linguistic and, especially, translation aspects remain largely underestimated. In the article, sacralization of the image of a national / political leader is seen as a dominant feature of dystopian novels aimed at accentuating totalitarian essence of the future society. Correspondingly, we treat it as a translation dominant which means that all linguistic and stylistic means of its expression are prioritized in translation. Among different means of sacralization preferred by different authors and analyzed in the article, we distinguish occasional modifications of phraseological units, proper names, forms of address, slogans, verses, allusions, metaphors, epithets, etc. Put together, they create in every dystopian novel the powerful image of a leading figure almost devoid of common human traits. The biggest challenge for the translator is to transfer this effect by the means of a target language, which requires the full employment of their creative skills.
