LINGUISTIC DISTANCE AND LANGUAGE-SPECIFIC ASPECT IN THE BILATERAL TRADE OF UKRAINE AND PRC

Abstract

People's Republic of China (PRC) is the second world’s largest economy in terms of nominal GDP, biggest manufacturer and a fast growing consumer market. In the past 20 years PRC reached the position of the primary producer and exporter of commodities controlling approximately 12% of world’s trade in 2015 and still continues to modernize its industry and advancing on new markets. For Ukraine PRC is major trade partner in Asia. Trade turnover of Ukraine-PRC bilateral trade increased from 0.68 bn. in 2001 to 6.17 bn. US$ in 2015. But at the same time structure of trade deteriorated and changed dramatically marking PRC as one of the biggest threats to Ukraine’s economic security. One of the trade relations with PRC are developing in the negative context for Ukraine is the linguistic distance between two countries. Interdependence between international trade, “linguistic distance” and language diversity was researched by Kwan Choi, John Stankey, David Ingram, and Gary Chittick. Kwan Choi also stated that language barrier can be an important element of trade war. Using respective elements of the previous research conducted by named economists and his own insight into statistical data author conducted his own measurement of linguistic distance between Ukraine and China by using proposed aggregate language distance method. Following method was based on three components: percentage of population of trade partner that is fluent in English, writing system and scale of language Diaspora. After measuring aggregated index of language distance between Ukraine and its largest partners in Pacific Rim it was revealed that China has wider distance than to Ukraine toppling even Japan. To reduce the current negative effect of immanent language barrier it was proposed by author to increase number of universities and faculties studying Chinese language in Ukraine as well as increase number of specialist in economy who are fluent in English and Chinese.
