Abstract
This article focuses on the specificity of English literary narrative viewed from the perspective of ludic stylistics with a specific reference to J. M. Coetzee’s idiostyle features. Ludic stylistics of a literary narrative is defined as an artistic phe- nomenon occurring due to the functioning of the network of lingual means (lexical, lexico-syntactic, verbal and figurative, plot and compositional as well as narrative – personage and narrative-semiotic) that, individually or in their interaction, are aimed at creating a certain ludic effect or a set of ludic effects. The paper elaborates on three ludic principles that underline the processes of narrative form deconventionalization in J. M. Coetzee’s novels: (i) the destruction of conven- tional narrative forms by means of their various transformations; (ii) the creation of new narrative forms with the help of a number of ludic devices; (iii) the restructuring of the semantics of narrative caused by ludic processes and the creation of “zones of intrusiveness, indeterminacy, and ambiguity”, which constitute the sense-forming focus of psychonarrative, metafictional as well as autofictional games in the novels in question. Particular emphasis is placed on exploring the ways of literary form deconventionalization in J. M. Coetzee’s works. The study supports the idea that the process of deconven- tionalization is actualized by the above-mentioned games. The research suggests that the mechanism of deconventional- ization in J. M. Coetzee’s novels reveals itself through three basic processes – (i) psychologization of a narrative form, (ii) its metafictionalization and (iii) autofictionalization. Psychologization consists in shifting the narrative focus from the event-centered narration to the experience-centered one. Metafictionalization, in its turn, presupposes the author’s use of such ludic devices that lay bare the “contractedness” of the narrative, emphasizing various “impossibilities” of fiction thus highlighting problematic relations between fact and fiction. Autofictionalization lies in employing a fictional mode to illuminate autobiographical facts.
