Abstract

Throughout the whole history of Lviv Dormition Brotherhood, its relationships with Lviv bishops have always been a crucial issue. These relationships acquired particular importance in late XVII – early XVIII century when under the circumstances Lviv diocese accepted the Union of Brest. After this event, the conflict between Lviv Stauropegion Brotherhood and bishop Joseph Shumliansky became particularly noticeable. Realizing that the Brotherhood stands in the way of the final transition to the jurisdiction of the Holy See, bishop repeatedly used force methods to solve this problem. But his attempts were not successful. Presence of Peter the First forces in the region due to the Northern War played not the least role in this. Members of the Brotherhood often used this to blackmail the bishop to go over under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarch. However, de facto, it was only a manipulation in order to obtain the necessary rights during the transition to the Union. Taking into consideration the narrowing of the social base and material recourses, this step was only a matter of time. The final blow to the Stauropegion was the creation of the print house by the The Order of Saint Basil the Great, which destroyed Brotherhood’s monopoly for printing «Ruthenian» books. As a result the bishop negotiated the terms of acceptance of the Holy See. With Shumliansky as a mediator consensus was reached and this started a new page in the history of Lviv Brotherhood. Change of denomination did not reflect on the situation of the fraternity. As evidence its representatives took part in the election of a new bishop, whom became Varlaam Sheptytsky. Though he was in charge for a relatively small amount of time, that period became almost the only peaceful period of relationships with Brotherhood. Moreover, the bishop himself initiated the gathering of all fraternities in order to coordinate efforts in fight for equal rights among the Ukrainian community in the city and on the suburbs entrusted to him. In fact, it was under his patronage that Lviv Dormition Brotherhood began a new phase of the struggle, which ended after dozens of years in at least partial achievement of its aim. Due to this the topic to which this article is dedicated to is relevant for research of the brotherhood and Ukrainian community of Lviv in the early XVIII century.
