MEASUREMENT OF QUENCHING INTENSITY, CALCULATION OF HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT AND GLOBAL DATABASE OF LIQUID QUENCHANTS
Journal Title: Materials Engineering - Materialove inzinierstvo (MEMI) - Year 2012, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper explains the need for a database of cooling intensities for liquid quenchants, in order to predict the quench hardness, microstructure, stresses and distortion, when real engineering components of complex geometry are quenched. The existing laboratory procedures for cooling intensity evaluation, using small test specimens, and Lumped-Heat-Capacity Method for calculation of heat transfer coefficient, are presented. Temperature Gradient Method for heat transfer calculation in workshop conditions, when using the Liscic/Petrofer probe, has been elaborated. Critical heat flux densities and their relation to the initial heat flux density, is explained. Specific facilities for testing quenching intensity in workshop conditions, are shown. The two phase project of the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE), as recently approved, is mentioned.

Microstructural changes of AISI 316L due to structural sensitization and its influence on the fatigue properties
Mechanical and fatigue properties of material are dependent on its microstructure. The microstructure of AISI 316L stainless steel commonly used for the production of medical tools, equipment and implants can be easily i...
STRUCTURAL DEGRADATION OF HETEROGENEOUS WELDED JOINTS
Developing the techniques of welding materials with higher dynamic strength onto the rolling surfaces of rails is one of the options for increasing their operational endurance. The subject of this paper is an analysis of...
Influence of the surface finishing on the corrosion behaviour of AISI 316L stainless steel
The influence of the surface preparation of AISI 316L stainless steel by mechanical grinding, polishing and following passivation was examined by immersion corrosion tests in solution simulating body fluids. Decreasing o...
CYCLIC PLASTIC BEHAVIOUR OF UFG COPPER UNDER CONTROLLED STRESS AND STRAIN LOADING
The influence of stress- and strain-controlled loading on microstructure and cyclic plastic behaviour of ultrafine-grained copper prepared by equal channel angular pressing was examined. The stability of microstructure i...
Interaction of sub-zero treated Cr-V ledeburitic steel with alumina,100 Cr6 steel and bronze in dry sliding
The interaction of the Vanadis 6 steel, processed without/with an application of sub-zero treatment, with alumina (hard counterface), 100Cr6-ball bearing steel (counterface of an intermediate hardness) and CuSn6 (soft co...
