Moral and ethical education of junior pupils by means of verbal folklore (based on a textbook by O.Savchenko for elementary school readers)

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to conduct an analysis on the small folk forms contained in the readers for the second grade pupils by the author-compiler O. Savchenko and to reveal their role in moral and ethical education of junior pupils. Research methods are analysis, synthesis, and system approach. An inevitable prerequisite for the implementation of social reforms in Ukrainian society and one of the priorities of the modern elementary school is the moral and ethical education of the younger generation. After all, reforming different spheres of life requires a person with high spirituality, morality and the recognition of ethical values as regulators of behavior. A successful solution of this problem will be facilitated by the introduction of the best examples of verbal folklore, which will form junior pupils' moral and ethical values in the educational process. The article covers the content of the verbal folklore, which is contained in the readers for the 2-grade pupils (authorcompiler is O. Savchenko) and reveal the problem of moral and ethical education of junior pupils. It is found out that under the conditions of social changes, morality is not a self-value, but a direction of personal development. It is grounded that the most sensitive period for the development of the moral and ethical qualities of a child is the junior school age, when a personality, memory, thinking, imagination develop, and the first moral experience is gained. Everything that influences a child in that period of time, accompanies him/her throughout the life at the subconscious level, promotes the formation of a position of life, principles, beliefs, ideals. It is proved that, reflecting reality, folklore forms the universal moral and ethical values of an individual, the ability to feel the peculiarities of the native language, and therefore, it is a necessary step in involving children in the national culture and achievements of the Ukrainian people. Verbal folk art develops junior pupils' skills of cultural behavior, teaches to be polite, responsible, hardworking, generous, respect people, family, native land in a concise manner and in an accessible form. The study does not cover theoretical and practical searches for the problem solution. Further attention is required to study the problem of moral and ethical education of elementary school pupils by means of Ukrainian folk tales.
