An Important Skill for First Reading-Writing Process: Phonological Awareness

Abstract
The student’s gaining basic language skills that he will utilize throughouthis life is only possible with accurately and effectively planned first reading andwriting teaching process. Many skills have important roles in reaching the requiredreadiness for first reading and writing teaching. One of these skills is phonologicalawareness. Phonological awareness is an oral language skill which is a pre-requisiteof understanding the relationship between the letter and the function of the letter.The purpose of this study is to examine the phonological awareness which is animportant skill for first reading and writing process in the light of the studies inliterature and to make recommendations about first reading and writing process. Inthe light of the findings of the researchers studying on this topic, it was found thatthe phonological awareness skill that developed during the pre-school period had animportant affect on gaining advanced reading and writing skills.
