Cooperation of enterprises with R&D units in creating and developing product innovation in Pomeranian food processing sector

Journal Title: Zarządzanie i Finanse - Year 2014, Vol 12, Issue 2

Abstract

Today the key to create innovation successfully is to absorb proper know-how either by developing it within the organization, or by skillfully obtaining it from outside. There is a chance to raise a level of innovation in enterprises by a network participation that allows to achieve economies of scale and experience sharing. Partners in collaborative networks can be following entities: other companies including suppliers, direct or indirect competitors, as well as research units. The last ones offer their results of basic and applied research that can be a valuable source of inspiration in new product creation and development. A number of new products on the market offered by Polish manufacturers differs significantly from the average level in the European Union. This situation is caused by the low level of R & D companies’ expenditures, as well as the unsatisfactory state of knowledge acquisition from outside. Therefore on that background, it is necessary to find the answer to the question about a status, intensity and effects of cooperation attempts between Pomeranian companies and R&D units – especially in the field of undertaken collaboration to create innovative products. As the results of research conducted among 50 enterprises in Pomerania show only a few companies have had the experience in such cooperation. Local R&D units have been perceived by companies in the region as educational entities with a low level of practical skills in the field of development work for industry. However, among the surveyed companies it has been observed entities on the market which had formed cooperative relationships with scientific circles. It should be noted that enterprises which had confirmed effects in working with local R&D institutions were characterized by several features: they were not small and transmitting at least 5% of annual turnover to their R&D activities. It is significant, that the entities which have collaborated with R&D institutions, had implemented product innovations much more frequently and done it with greater intensity than those that hadn’t had such cooperative experiences. Thus, it can be assumed that local enterprises’ collaboration with R&D units has positive effects on the number of created new products in these enterprises’ offer and also influences on the increased frequency of innovative processes in companies.
