Functioning of alternative currencies in the world – chances and threats

Abstract
The article presents the problem of functioning of alternative currencies in the world. Its aim is an attempt to introduce the problem of alternative currencies closer and show the benefits and threats connected with them. In the article a definition of alternative currencies, their typology, premises of creating and an outline of the history are presented. The interpretation of available data depicting the development of such currencies based on registered systems is made and then the analysis of the benefit and threats associated with functioning of contemporary alternative currencies in the world is carried out.
