MALOCCLUSION IN HANDICAPPED SCHOOL CHILDREN IN REPUBLIC MOLDOVA

Abstract
To determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in mentally handicapped children in Republic Moldova and to assess whether the observed malocclusion is affected by age and sex. The study population consisted of 420 children mentally handicapped children between 6-20 years of age from 3 special schools for people with special needs in Republic Moldova. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to record the findings and socio-demographic information. The handicapped children were examined in their respective schools under natural light. The independent student's t-test was used for the comparison of mean score between groups. There were no statistically significant differences (p< 0.05) in the mean malocclusion scores between gender and among the age groups. Malocclusion was found in 80% of the subjects. Class I malocclusion was most frequently observed (50,5%), Class II in 14,1%, Class III in 5.6%, The malocclusion traits detected were anterior crowding in 32%, anterior spacing in 19%, deep bite in 19.5%, open bite in 25%. overjet 25,5, overbite 8,98%. Prevalence of malocclusion among handicapped children in Republic Moldova is comparable with other populations. Mentally disabled individuals with malocclusion were in 80% and had higher frequencies of all types the malocclusion.
