Need for the Research Cultures

Journal Title: Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 0

Abstract

One of the major hurdles for scientific research in India is lack of Research culture specially in medical field and in field of orthopaedic surgery. In countries that have good research output, the universities and institutes invest heavily in developing and sustaining this research culture. However, in our country this effort is almost nonexistence. Universities and institutes are lacking the basic infrastructure for Research and most of them don't even have a qualified statistician. The inculcation of research culture should begin from first day in medical school. However, in our medical curriculum for undergraduates, even basics of research is not covered. Introduction of research concept is only in the fifth year and forms a small part of Biostatistics which is a small part of preventive and social medicine subject. There is hardly any emphasis on reading journals and many students who enrol into to post graduation have not even seen or read any journal article in their lives. In such scenario, how can we expect our PG students to start a thesis or write a synopsis? There must be an effort from the MCI or the local universities to promote research culture in the Medical colleges. A dedicated lecture series on research should be started from first year of under graduation. Journals and research methods need to be introduced early in medical education. Journal clubs and special journal screenings for them will help. Along with that a small research project should be made compulsory for medical graduates. Only then the quality and quantity of medical research in India will improve. Organisation like UPOA and IOA can also take initiatives in this direction. Our intention is to improve the quality of research in the country and we believe early initiation in research methods will help in this. Please write to us your views on the same as letter to editor Regards Sincere regards Dr. Sanjay Dhawan Dr. Ashok Shyam
