Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia: A Case Report

Abstract

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) represents a spectrum of diseases which includes dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, invasive squamous cell carcinoma of conjunctiva and cornea. A 58 year old male patient came to our OPD with complaints of redness in left eye since two years and swelling on the conjunctiva since six months. Left eye slit lamp examination showed a gelatinous swelling of about 5mm × 6mm at nasal limbus between 6’o clock – 8’oclock position with the margin extending 1mm into the cornea. The swelling showed increased vascularity (tortuous vessels are present in arborizing pattern extending from base onto the surface of swelling). Surface cytology showed benign cuboidal cells, occasional benign squamous cells, few cuboidal cells showing metaplasia and dysplastic nuclear change suggestive of conjunctival or corneal intraepithelial neoplasia. Wide surgical excision of the left eye limbal lesion was done along with application of cryotherapy and amniotic membrane grafting. features were suggestive of CIN grade 3 (carcinoma in situ).
