Abstract

Contribution of Osip Senkovskij to the Development of Russian Turkology Russian Turkology is examined in three terms in general. The first period covers the period from the term that Tsarist Russia was established as a system to 1917. The second period is from 1917 to 1991 and the third one is from 1991 to the present day. Especially the first period is a very long process. It is difficult to determine the exact starting date of this period as well as to address the studies in this period within a scientific understanding of Turcology. Studies evaluating the first period in our country are very limited or many studies can be considered as general evaluations. The change movements in Tsarist Russia, which started with the First Petro, provided the establishment of academic institutions. In this period, scientists from the West, especially from Germany, take the first place in Russia. Over time, the doors of these institutions, which have their own academic staff, are not blocked by the external brain. Occasionally, scientists from Europe and sometimes from other countries have established the basis of the Turcology science, especially the Oriental. Osip Ivanovich Senkovskiy (1800-1859) was among these scholars. Senkovskiy, who has contributed not only to the field of Turcology but also to the field of Orientalism, is also a member of Russia’s publishing career. In this study, Senkovskiy’s life, his works on Turcology, and publishing studies will be evaluated.
