Abstract

The purpose of the research was to collect and analyze data in order to assess the number of athletes playing in selected Polish sports clubs after a surgery of reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament of knee joint. Observations also concerned the time span the athletes needed to actively take up their sport anew. The research was conducted among football and basketball players from Polish first league clubs in 2008-2009 season. They represented 21 clubs and thelr number totalled 349 people. Football was represented by 207 players from 9 clubs of the Premier League. Male basketball was analyzed on the basis of data obtained in 6 clubs of the all-Poland first league from 70 individuals. The research was also conducted among 72 players from 6 clubs of the district first female basketball league in group C. The collected data have established that around 15% of sportspeople from the scrutinized clubs underwent reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament. They returned to actively doing their sports discipline after 6 months. Most of the examined players underwent one reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and they consist 83% of all examined individuals. The collected data confirm that return to a sport after ACL rupture is possible even after several injuries of this type treated surgically. The number of athletes who sustained ACL rupture consisted a group which was statistically significant. The biggest group in terms of number of players after ACL reconstruction versus the total number of players in a given discipline were female basketball players (18%).
