Personality determinants of the tendency to adopt the role of the victim and perpetrator of emotional abuse in a marriage

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2017, Vol 23, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction and objectrive According to Costa and McCrae, personality encompasses five dimensions: neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness. They are agential structures that are responsible for the actions of every person. Thus, it can be assumed that they also determine tendencies to adopt the role of the victim and perpetrator of emotional abuse in a marriage. Emotional abuse is defined as behaviours aimed at gaining control over and subordinating another person by intimidating, humiliating and verbal insult. The aim of the study is to determine personality determinants of the tendency to adopt the role of the victim and perpetrator of emotional abuse in a marriage. Material and Methods The research sample comprised 334 married people. The NEO Five -Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) adapted by Zawadzki and Strelau and the author’s own Questionnaire for Measuring Emotional Abuse in Close Relationships were used in the research. Results Personality traits that determine the tendency to adopt the role of the victim of emotional abuse in a marriage are neuroticism and introversion. The tendency to use emotional abuse towards a spouse is conditioned by high openness, extraversion, and neuroticism, as well as low agreeableness. Conclusions The analyses performed in the course of the research proved that selected personality traits are predictors of the tendency to adopt the role of the victim and perpetrator of emotional abuse in a marriage. The obtained results have cognitive meaning and can be used for developing preventive and aid programmes aimed at therapeutic work with the victims and perpetrators of emotional abuse in marriages.
