“PETERSBOURG WILL SEEM A DANDY TO YOU AFTER ROME”: TRAVELOGUE TRADITIONS IN M. HOHOL’S EPISTOLARY WORKS

Abstract

The fact that M. Hohol used travelogue in his letters were caused by the theory and practice of Romanticism as well as by the life events of this romanticist who traveled through Europe a lot. That is why there were the descriptions of Russia, Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy in M. Hohol’s letters, and these descriptions often developed into self-sufficient travelogues. Hohol’s letter-travelogue had such features of romantic poetics as contrast, striving for arts fusion, the attention to human as a phenomenon and others. By declaring a human the most valuable memorial, which can be seen during the voyage, M. Hohol demonstrated strictly romantic view on a letter-travelogue as a document, which should describe not only the exterior life of the nation, but also its inner, spiritual life.
