Phenotypic changes in poppy plants (Papaver somniferum L.) after flowering and accumulation of morphine in poppy capsules I. The development of a poppy plants and poppy capsules after flowering
Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2011, Vol 32, Issue 1
Abstract
The studies on phenotypic changes during the development of poppy plants after flowering were carried out in years 2009 and 2010 in two localities. The material consisted of two cultivars of low morphine poppy: Mieszko and Rubin and cultivar Lazur high in morphine. Biometric measurements were carried out systematically on the marked plants during the flowering period from the end of flowering to the full maturity. The obtained results show that environmental conditions affect plant growth. The growth of poppy capsules lasted until about 20 days after flowering, and later gradually decreased, which was associated with the capsules maturation and drying. The shape of poppy capsules determined with calculated shape index was characteristic for each cultivar.
