Photo catalytic studies of graphene oxide-zinc oxide Nano composites
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 6
Abstract
Nano-sized ZnO particles, owing to their large surface area can be effectively utilized to enhance the photo catalytic activity. In nano-sized particles, agglomeration occurs more readily, the resultant difficulty of their separation and recycling from the reaction system after photo catalysis hinders their application in this field. The MB-degrading photo catalytic activities of the prepared GO-ZnO catalysts were evaluated under visible light irradiation. It can be seen that the maximum absorbance at 665 nm rapidly decreases with the increase in irradiation time and disappears almost completely after 60 minutes. The lack of any new –appearing peak in the course of the reaction signaled that degradation had been successfully completed. To elucidate the synergy-induced enhancement of GO-ZnO photo catalytic efficiency, comparative experiments were performed using ZnO nano particles and GO-ZnO nano composites of 1%,2%,5%, and 10% of GO with ZnO in the photo degradation of MB. Further the influence of GO over ZnO is very much clear in case of the GO-ZnO compositions on the Photo chemical degradation of the MB dye. Pure ZnO has a minimal degradation effect on the MB dye whereas addition of GO content has significantly enhanced the photo degradation of the dye. Here it is when compared to 1% and 2% GO-ZnO composites. Further, 10% GO-ZnO composite has similar results to that of 5% GO-ZnO hence for all other studies this sample have been selected.
