Phytochemical characterization of the threatened specie Fraxinus caroliniana Mill subsp. cubensis (Griseb.) Borhidi
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2016, Vol 16, Issue 2
Abstract
Fraxinus caroliniana Mill subsp. cubensis (Griseb.) Borhidi is commonly known as buffalo, represents an endemic subspecies and categorized as critical danger of extinction in Cuba. This work aimed to characterize the phytochemical composition of plants of F. caroliniana in two localities of the Matanzas province. The presence of secondary metabolites in leaf extracts was qualitatively analyzed and reductive and total sugars were quantified. The results indicated the presence of flavonoids, terpenes, steroids, saponins, tannins and anthraquinones in leaves that could be considered for further systematic studies and application in agriculture. The plants from the Ciénaga de Zapata showed contents of reducing sugars and totals higher than those obtained in the plants of Martí. These results provide information for the identification of characters of possible taxonomic and conservation value in this species.

Evaluation of the effect of three in vitro culture conditions on the quality of sugarcane seedlings propagated in bioreactors Temporary Immersion
Structural and functional deficiencies that affect survival during acclimatization are present in micropropagated plants. The current study was carried out to determine the effect of three in vitro culture conditions (a...
Indirect somatic embryogenesis of Swietenia macrophylla King in semisolid culture medium
Biotechnological techniques are an alternative to propagate Swietenia macrophylla King. However, micropropagation by organogenesis in this species has been little or not developed due to big microbial contamination and...
In vitro establishment and multiplication of Curcuma longa L.
Turmeric is a very valuable plant as condiment, dye and due to its medicinal properties. Although results achieved in the in vitro propagation, rates of in vitro establishment and multiplication are low. The aim of this...
Identification and selection of somatic hybrids obtained by protoplast fusion
Efficient selection of hybrid plants produced by protoplast fusion is very important. Several advances have been made on the subject in recent decades. The methods used for the identification of somatic hybrids include...
Mycobiota of donor plants and fungal contaminants from the in vitro establishment of bamboo species
The presence of fungal contaminants may limit the establishment of bamboos explants. Knowing the contaminant microorganisms present in donor plants allow to trace more appropriate control strategies. This work was aimed...
