Abstract

Bohdan Piętka THE FIRST PHASE OF THE EXTERMINATION OF THE JEWS FROM THE WARTHELAND IN KL AUSCHWITZ (MARCH – APRIL 1943) Deportation of Jews from the Wartheland to Auschwitz took place in two phases. The first took place in 1943, when were liquidated labor camps for Jews. These camps were located in the Wartheland, as well as in Pomerania and Brandenburg, where worked the Jews directed previously there from labor camps in the Wartheland and the ghetto in Łódź. The second phase of deportations took place in August 1944, when were brought to KL Auschwitz about 67 000 Jews from the liquidated ghetto in Łódź. It has been shown in the publication of Andrzej Strzelecki, Deportation of Jews from the ghetto in Łódź to Auschwitz and their Extermination (Oświęcim 2004). This article discusses the role played by KL Auschwitz in extermination of the Jews from the Wartheland in 1943. In the first stage of mass extermination of Jews from the Wartheland in KL Auschwitz – which began after the ceasing work of the extermination centre in Chełmno on the Ner River – Nazis directed to the camp around 9700 (9774) the Jews. The first transport of about 1000 Jews arrived in KL Auschwitz from the Wartheland 31st March 1943, that is just a week before ceasing work of the extermination centre in Chełmno on the Ner River (7 April 1943). Apart from this transport, in 1943 were sent to KL Auschwitz about 8700 Jews, who came from the Wartheland and were imprisoned in labour camps on the area of the Wartheland, Pomerania and Brandenburg. About 4800 of them were murdered in the gas chambers after the selection at the unloading ramp. Others – registered in the camp as prisoners – mostly did not survive the war. The absolute extermination of the Jews from the Wartheland, still remained alive in the labor camps, was the signal of the destruction of the ghetto in Łódź, which followed a year later. The almost total annihilation of the Jewish people in the Wartheland was a result of the Nazi policy of extermination of the Jewish people, especially zealously pursued by the German authorities on this area occupied Polish territories.
