Pilot study on urine analysis in glycosuric patients at tertiary care hospital

Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Background : Urine analysis is relatively cheap and easy to do. Urine analysis can be used to check for protein in urine by urine dipstick for glomerular disease and microscopic examination of pus cells for asymptomatic pyuria or urinary tract infection and dysmorphic RBCs , casts for glomerular disease. Methods : We retrospectively studied 670 glycosuric patient's urine samples at outpatient departmental laboratory of Pathology Department at P.D.U. Medical College & Hospital, Rajkot during the period January 2018 to May 2018. Results : Out of them 240 samples were positive for protein, dysmorphic RBCs, casts and pus cells while 130 samples were positive for only protein, dysmorphic RBCs, casts & 95 samples having only microscopic pus cells seen. So risk of developing glomerular disease and urinary tract infection coexisting in glycosuric patients is approximately 35.8%, only glomerular disease or asymptomatic proteinuria is approximately 19.40% & only asymptomatic pyuria or urinary tract infection is approximately 14.2%. Conclusion : Glycosuria leads to disturbance of kidney function and increasing risk of urinary tract infection. Our result shows there are increased chances of progression to glomerular disease and susceptibility to urinary tract infection in patients having glycosuria.
