Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2015, Vol 28, Issue 12

Abstract

Pineal tumors make 1% of all tumors of central nervous system (CNS) lesions in generalpopulation. They are observed more frequently in children (3-8% of all CNS tumors)than adults. Etiology of pineal lesions is complex. Tumors could be divided into pinealparenchymal neoplasms (pineocytoma, pineal parenchymal tumor of intermediate differentiation, papillary tumor of the pineal region, pineoblastoma), germ cells tumors (germinomasand nongerminomatous germ cell tumors), astrocytomas, gliomas, hemangiomas, and meningiomas. Metastasis could also be present in the pineal location.Pineal lesions may display a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms. Manifestation ofpineal tumor depends on histological type, ability of synthesis and secretion of oncoproteins, and expansion grade. When taking into an account a variety of pineal lesionetiology and different treatment methods depending of tumor type, there is a need ofproceeding intensive and accurate diagnostic process with use of radiology methods tooptimize treatment. Although some tumors are malignant, they are potentially curable. Thus, obtaining correct diagnosis and therapy may improve quality of life and couldextend illness-free time.
