Poliomyelitis: From the historical epidemic to the present in Public Health

Abstract

Introduction: Poliomyelitis is a disease that has coexisted with humanity since time immemorial, generating an increase in the demand for health services and showing the negative effect of the recent epidemic episode in some populations where the disease had been eliminated. Objective: Analyze the historical polio epidemic to the present day in Public Health for an intervention plan. Materials and methods: Case study, qualitative/clinical, selection of articles, with database and documentary-analytical review. Results: In 1999, Nigeria eradicated wild poliovirus type 2, marking a major milestone, despite occasional border crossings. Five potential risks currently for polio control around the world and one is the most worrying, such as the halting of 46 anti-polio vaccination campaigns around the world due to COVID-19 in 2020. Israel's first case since 1988. It was the worst pathology in the 20th century and has been replaced by TB and HIV today. It attacks the cells of the motor neurons, becoming inactive, causing theirdestruction and spread, leading to an epidemic. Conclusions: Poliomyelitis, one of the six global diseases that has been sought to be eradicated since 1988, is re-emerging in new places and its first consequence is post-vaccine flaccid paralysis
