Journal Title: Bibliotheca Nostra. Śląski Kwartalnik Naukowy - Year 2016, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

The aim of the article is to present the collection of Polish books for children and young people, which were included in the BARFIE Book Catalogue. The BARFIE Project (Books and Reading For Intercultural Education) is a European Union enterprise that realizes the ideas of intercultural education. The program was implemented between 2002 and 2004. Eleven European countries joined the project: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Portugal, Slovakia, the UK, and Poland, the latter having been represented by the W. J. Grabski Public Library in Warsaw. One of the most signifi cant measures taken under the project was the preparation of the international catalogue of books useful in the intercultural education of children and young people. It contains descriptions of 138 publications in the realm of contemporary literature for children and young people that were selected by the institutions representing the countries participating in the undertaking. The books by contemporary national authors were chosen for the catalogue on the account of the criterion of their usefulness for the needs of intercultural education and their positive presentation of what the European heritage has in common and how the countries participating in the project differ from one another in the cultural sense. The catalogue can be regarded as the subject catalog, a very important bibliographic and documentation source and a kind of bibliographic and factual compendium about the recent European literature for children and young people in the area of intercultural education. The collection also contains seven books by Polish authors: Magda.doc by Marta Fox, Jeż [Hedgehog] by Katarzyna Kotowska, Miłość, psiakrew [Love, Dammit] by Ewa Nowacka, Hera, moja miłość [Hera, My Love] by Anna Onichimowska, Trzeci świat Mateusza [The Third Word of Matthew] by Ewa Przybylska, Chwileczkę, Walerio [Just a minute, Valeria] by Krystyna Siesicka, and Tego lata w Burbelkowie [That Summer at Burbelkowo] by Marta Tomaszewska.
