Abstract
The article is devoted to the relevant issue of historical lexicology – study of the lexical composition of ancient Ukrainian written manuscripts of XIV–XVI centuries. Material was collected by sampling from various written sources of ancient Ukrainian language of XIV–XVI centuries. It was found that the analyzed text included eight lexical items with the root -rad- (rad`, radost`, radostny, radovatysia, poradovatysia, obradovatysia, sradovatysia, vzradovatysia) to indicate the emotional state of pleasure. The highest functional activity is demonstrated with the word radost` – «a sense of satisfaction, joy, pleasure» and radovatysia – «to be (stay) in a state of emotional satisfaction». The uncommon words include adjective rad` – «full of joy and satisfaction» and verbal derivatives poradovatysia, obradovatysia, sradovatysia. vzradovatysia combined by general meaning of «to be (stay) in the emotional state of joy». It is significantly that the individual language units are not recorded in the register part of the «Ancient Ukrainian Language Dictionary of XIV–XV centuries», although, according to study results, show a remarkable performance in the specified period of the ancient Ukrainian language historical development. In addition, the first fixation was specified of identified lexical items, the etymology was traced, the semantic structure was reconstructed, and operation features described. It was found that the studied texts show the ability of the analyzed words to transform their semantic structures. The history was traced of the corresponding lexical items meaning development within the specified period, their role defined in the modern Ukrainian language. Most of them were preserved with minor graphic-phonetic and semantic modifications in the lexicon of modern Ukrainian language. Moreover, the root -radcontinuants to indicate the emotional state of satisfaction are also represented in other Slavic languages
