Positivist (meta)theorization of J.H. Turner: bases and projects of strategy

Abstract
The author considers genesis of the research project of development of general sociologic theory of J.H. Turner. Methodological principles of this project are positivism of A. Comte and H. Spencer and relaxed version of “logical positivism”. This methodology oriented J. Turner to the search for: 1) fundamental laws of organization and changes of social world; 2) determination of its main and general features; 3) revealing relations between these features and their representation in the form of abstract principles. Turner’s typologization of theorization strategies in sociology — model, propositional, analytical and metatheoretical schemes, has been analyzed. Turner’s evaluation of potentials of such types of sociological theorization has been generalized. Turner perceived the best potentialities for sociological theorization in development of sensitizing analytical schemes, formal propositional statements and analytical models. He considered mutual addition of these three strategies the condition of this potential realization. Empirical generalizations, causal models, middle level theories, metatheories and other formats of theorization play auxiliary role in Turner’s project of development.
