PREPARATION AND ANALYTICAL STUDY OF RASAPUSHPA

Journal Title: International Journal of Ayurveda & Alternative Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 6

Abstract

In Rasashastra, Mercury compounds have been broadly classified into Sagandha (with sulphur) and Nirgandha (without sulphur). Sagandha kalpanas were and are still widely used as against Nirgandha kalpanas fearing its toxicity. Sulphur is said to detoxify or minimise the toxic effects of mercury. Hence mercury when used alone is said to be more toxic, the reason why the use of Nirgandh kalpana diminished gradually. If these kalpanas are administered in the required dosage and duration as given in the texts then there is no need to fear its toxicity. Nirgandha kalpas like Mugdha rasa, Rasapushpa and Raskarpur were indicated for many acute conditions like gastroenteritis, cholera and others like syphilis and various skin diseases. They were used in a small dosage and for a short period. This increased the curiosity to study these compounds. Therefore Rasapushpa was chosen for this study. It was prepared according to the texts by kupipakwa method in two batches and later analysed. It was found that this compound is formed at 100-110oC temperature. If heated above this temperature the compound HgCl dissociates and we get mercury again in its natural form. Confirmatory test proved that the compound formed was HgCl, which is also known as Calomel. The analytical results obtained were compared with the standards of Rasapushpa.
