PRESERVATION OF THE QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF POTATOES IN THE POST-HARVEST PERIOD BY IMPROVING TRANSPORT CONDITIONS AND ASSOCIATED OPERATIONS

Abstract

Purpose. To identify the possible ways to reduce the losses of potato crop in the post-harvest period during transportation and related operations by analyzing the main factors that lead to these losses. Methodology. To improve the transport and associated operations with the potato harvest in the post-harvest period on the way to the storage (or consumption) a systematic approach is used. The research method is the determination and analysis of the main factors influencing the quality of the potato harvest in the post-harvest period during transportation and accompanying operations. Results. The approaches to increasing the efficiency of potato production by preserving the crop during transport and related operations are proposed; the main factors that have a negative impact, and possible ways to reduce them are considered. From the point of view of mechanical damage to tubers leading to harvest losses, potato harvesting technologies that have become most used, as well as post-harvest potato processes, including field processing, sorting, separation of lumps and damaged tubers, are considered. The technological schemes of effective distribution of potatoes and consistency of transportation during its mass harvesting and harvesting are analysed. Originality. The methods of preserving the quality of tubers in the post-harvest period are substantiated through the use of modern transportation technologies and accompanying operations; the regulatory requirements for potatoes as raw materials and goods, its transport characteristics and conditions for the transportation of potatoes are defined; the legal and regulatory framework, the national and the states of the post-Soviet space has been defined, with regard to the requirements for quality, packaging, transportation and storage of potatoes, depending on its purpose; the influence of factors accompanying the operations of loading, unloading, transportation of potatoes, on the quality of tubers in terms of mechanical damage is summarized. Practical value. The results of the article can be implemented to develop effective schemes and technologies for the transport of commodity potatoes by road.
