Profesor Mieczysław Gębarowicz (1893–1984) w nauce i kulturze polskiej. Kilka uwag na kanwie monografii Macieja Matwijowa o polskim uczonym

Abstract
Mieczysław Gębarowicz was a Polish professor at Jan Kazimierz University before the war, as well as director of Ossolineum in Lviv during the German occupation. He was a member of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a great scholar and patriot. After 1945, he decided to remain in Lviv to help rescue Polish cultural treasures from destruction and historical oblivion. An art and culture historian, his main area of interest was the territory in and around the Polish-Russian border. He was the author of many excellent source-based works dealing with the sphere of Latin and Byzantine culture in the eastern lands. His work was mainly based on materials that were difficult for Polish researchers to gain access to. His achievements are not only limited to the scope of academic work. Professor Gębarowicz was a walking encyclopedia with regards to Lviv and the South-eastern lands of the former Rzeczpospolita. He could often be found helping others in various libraries and archives in Poland and the Soviet Union. A testament to Gębarowicz’s interests and scholarly life is the vast amount of his correspondence found in Ossolineum in Wrocłąw, as well as in private hands, resurrected by Maciej Matwijow, the author of a recently published monograph dedicated to Gębarowicz. It can be said, that Gębarowicz was not always understood within the circle of Soviet-era researchers, probably due to his original method of interpreting and presenting historical facts, mostly devoid of Marxist methodology. He was able to accurately characterize the reality of post-war Lviv. In his monograph, Matwijow describes the hardships that Gębarowicz had to deal with both in Lviv and at home, as a result of the publication of his works. The author of the monograph characterizes the various people that Gębarowicz met and corresponded with over the course of his life. He especially underlines the assistance of Professor Jadwiga Puciata-Pawłowska from Toruń (Poland), without whom it would have been very difficult to publish Professor Gębarowicz’s works.
