Project activities as a factor of development of intellectual and creative abilities of elementary school students

Abstract

The problem of formation of intellectual and creative skills of elementary school students takes a special place in pedagogical theory and practice. These skills are important for the overall development of personality of elementary school student. The process of mastering those contributes to the development of cognitive skills and abilities of students. Professors believe that mastery of intellectual and creative skills contributes to the development of strong knowledge foundation. The project method plays a significant role in addressing the problem of renovation of the educational process in Ukrainian schools. The development of projects allows integration of knowledge and skills of elementary school students. The project method fosters students' independence, initiative, as well as development of their creative abilities. The use of a project plays an important role in shaping the intellectual and creative abilities of elementary school students. The choice of topics and types of projects may be based on different approaches. Each type of project is characterized by a particular coordination, timelines, phases, and number of participants. The theme of the project must address specific practical problems. The development of project requires students to have knowledge of different subjects, creative thinking, and research skills. However, teachers do not sufficiently use the power of the project method for the development of intellectual and creative skills of elementary school students. In the practice of modern schools a traditional training process is dominating. The project method is becoming increasingly popular in the educational system of different countries of the world. The use of projects is an effective technology of development of intellectual and creative skills of elementary school students. The project method includes a combination of research, search, problem, and creative approaches. It contributes to the creative development of educational activities of students. Reproductive educational activity of elementary school students is replaced by various types of independent activities. The project method implementation leads to a change in teacher’s role. He becomes an organizer of learning activities of students. The development and approbation of effective methods and technologies of formation of intellectual and creative abilities of elementary school students is a promising direction for future research.
