Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this task program is to enable students to gain scientific attitude and skills in order for them to be able to deal with the problems they will confront during their careers and to obtain the information in medical education. Conducting a scientific research, significantly contributes to realization of this objective. It has been emphasized in various studies that the medical students are keen on conducting scientific researches, and it has been stated that they need to be supported in this respect, as they lack the adequate fund of knowledge. This study aims to share information throughout a 5-year performance of the research training program (RTP) conducted at Ege University, Faculty of Medicine. RTP is an educational program applied in addition and in parallel to the medical degrees for the purposes of establishing scientific thought, attitude, proceeding and knowledge of the willing medical students, and enabling them to adopt study skills. The dynamic program produced by the RTP committee which was founded in 2009, has been admitting students starting from 2011-2012 academic year. RTP program has been developing each and every year via feedback received from the students, also the operating principles, a manual for advisor and an introductory booklet have been laid out. Applications are being accepted at the end of each academic year, making announcement to the freshmen in advance. Among many applicants, 16 students are being admitted to the program, taking the assessment criteria into consideration. Second and third year students attend the didactic part of the program during the terms devoted to special study modules. Thereafter, they go through the project management phase, and accomplish their projects under supervision of a faculty member until their graduation. Over the five years, RTP committee has undertaken various activities to introduce the program to the faculty and students, and to develop the program. 12 students who were the first graduates of the program, accomplishing their projects, received their certificates at the graduation ceremony of 2014-2015 academic years. Currently, there are 61 students in total from all classes who perpetuate their studies within the RTP program. The organization of RTP project fest that is being held every year, provides motivation to the students and faculty members with student project presentations, opportunities of attending congresses and social activities. An inventive training pattern of Ege University - Faculty of Medicine, RTP experience is being maintained as a dynamic process and successfully keeps the students advised of conducting scientific researches
