RE-SEMANTIZATIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF ‘SIMPLE-NESS’ IN „HISTORY OF THE SLAVO-BULGARIANS” BY PAISII HILENDARSKI AND „BAI GANYO” BY ALEKO KONSTANTINOV (AN INTERTEXTUAL ANALYSIS)

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18

Abstract

The article discusses the change in the semantic structure and axiological value of the concept of the „simplicity” of the Bulgarian people in two emblematic for the Bulgarian culture works: „History of the Slavo-Bulgarians”, written by Paisii Hilendarski, the ideologist of the National Revival in Bulgaria, and „Bai Ganyo. Anecdotal tales of a modern Bulgarian”, written by Aleko Konstantinov at the very end of the pre-modern literary era. The intertextual analysis shows that these works enter into a dialogue as they re-interpret the meaning of the epithet „simple”, habitually attached to the Bulgarians’ ethnic name. Paisii’s „History” neutralizes the offensive connotations contained in the definition of „simple” attached to the ethnonym „Bulgarian”, thus disempowering those who use it to allure the Bulgarians away from their native culture and into a foreign one. Aleko’s „Bai Ganyo” brings the offensive and derisive connotations of the epithet back and adds new elements to the meaning of the word. In fact the book reflects and adds to a change in the basics of the cultural ideology, having gradually taken place in the Post-Liberation era. Despite its popularity, or rather because of it, „Bai Ganyo” proves to be a most problematic work, a destructive act in Bulgarian culture as it undermines the National Revival ideology, destroys the axiological priority of the „simple people”, purported by the ideologues of the National Revival, and revives the shame of „our own” bringing the Bulgarians back to the pre-Paisii era of self-effacement and worship of the foreign.
