Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 38

Abstract

Although attempts for Ottoman industrialization dates back to 18th century, remarkabledevelopments occured in 19th century. Factories built in that era were regarded as one of the important components of Ottoman modernization project. Building factories was one of the issues that Ottoman rulers had desired to define and control. For that reason at various times regulations (some become valid and some not) had been arranged in order to define the rules and limitations for building factories. This study aims to reveal the legal framework of establishing factories in Ottoman lands by focusing on the archival records of regulations, from the beginnig of the Tanzimat era to Republic, comprising some urban and spatial decisions about building factories.
